So,
How can you use your PHP skills to make money?
Here are 7 ways PHP developers can make money today.
From the most simple (suitable for beginners) to the most demanding (for expert developers).
Let’s dive in.
1. Work as a freelancer
Perhaps the easiest way you can find a job as a PHP developer is to start freelancing.
There are many specialized websites where you can look for job requests and where to offer your skills.
Including:
Upwork
Fiverr
Toptal
Freelancing is good for beginners. It doesn’t require huge investments and you can do it even without much experience.
Usually, the more skilled you are the more money you can make as a freelancer.
2. Become a WordPress creator
WordPress is more popular than ever.
And there is a huge market for WordPress themes, plugins and add-ons.
WordPress PHP development is usually easy enough (just be sure to know about PHP security).
You can sell your WordPress products from your own website or from portals like Envato Market.
Keep in mind that some themes and plugins require good front-end skills.
So, you may want to team up with a front-end developer if you are focused on back-end development.
3. Work as a full-time developer
The most “safe” solution is to get hired by a company as a full-time developer.
(This is how I make money, by the way).
Getting hired is not always easy.
Companies seek for experienced developers. Possibly with some references.
Therefore, you may want to make some experience as a freelancer first.
A full-time job offers more stability and safety than freelancing.
On the other hand, you can usually make more money as a freelancer in the long run.
4. Build a website
Perhaps the most obvious one: build your own website.
Today, great websites get immediate attention and grow very rapidly.
There are many successful websites out there. Some examples are image archives like Pexels and Freepik. Or productivity tools like Trello and Notion.
If you have a great idea, then it’s worth trying implementing it.
Even if you are not going to build the next Facebook (but… who knows?), a simple but good idea is all you need to get started.
5. Create a SAAS
A SAAS is a “software as a service”. Basically, it’s a service that runs over the Internet.
For example, SMS gateways or cloud services like Dropbox.
SAAS are more technical than websites. They usually require more coding skills.
On the other hand, they do not require much front-end work.
The SAAS market is really big so you may want to keep an eye on it.
6. Teach PHP (online or offline)
Once you have enough experience with PHP programming, you can teach it to others.
You can teach in local schools (either as a school employee or as a freelancer), or go online with a blog or a YouTube channel.
You can create online PHP courses, too.
With WordPress, you can host your own courses with “LSM” plugins like LearnDash or LifterLMS.
If you prefer to rely on a dedicated course platform, you can choose among many, including:
Teachable (the one I use for my own courses)
Thinkific
Udemy
7. Work as a web security consultant
If you have a very good knowledge of web security topics, you can work as a web security consultant.
You will make code reviews, penetration testing and so on.
Security consultant are highly requested (and usually paid very well).
Of course, you can apply for such jobs only after you have mastered web security.
That’s it for today.
Now I want to hear from you.
Are you already working as a professional PHP developer? What is your dream PHP job?
Have a nice day
